After much hype from O2 and the inevitable loss of exclusivity of the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the Palm Pre has finally hit the UK on the O2 network.

The Pre runs Palm’s proprietary webOS and actually runs quite smoothly with the added benefit that it allows for multi tasking.

The Pre’s smart 3.1in touchscreen works quite well but the clarity for some reason did not appear to be as clear or sharp as the iPhone, but this could be due to my background lighting. The keyboard on the Palm Pre is useful and small, but those used to Blackberry ( Bold 2, Curve ) may find it too small but it was still very useable nonetheless.

There is 8Gb ( non expandable ) of onboard memory for storing your photo’s, music, etc. But the camera itself is only 3MP and does not allow for video recording (possibly paving way for the Pre 2 perhaps ? ).

Support for emails is good and it has a good interface for Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Pop3, etc. For a non Blackberry/iPhone device, it was actually quite pleasant.

Connectivity of the Palm  Pre is in the way of 3G/HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.1 and Wifi.

A refreshingly different and good to use smartphone. However, not quite as polished in the email sector as the Blackberry nor as complete in the must have department as the iPhone. Overall, as close as you can get to a Blackberry or an iPhone at the moment.
